We can honestly say that this gentleman, Mr Hugh MacLeod, is one of a kind. He’s been in the same place many of us found ourselves in during the past few years, and came out victorious. All because of his Evil Plan. For Hugh Macleod things got going a little differently than with a standard career. He forgot his sketch book and started drawing on the back of business cards at bars in Manhattan while struggling how to combat the reality of an off and on advertising career. He needed a new plan.
Hugh developed his own evil plan by sharing the cartoons that he had been drawing on the back of business cards through a newly created blog. The passion that spawned form the blog inspired Hugh’s first book titled “Ignore Everybody” and most recently “Evil Plans”.
Hugh’s book is the story of more than how he did it, but how you can do it too.
1. Make Art Every Day
Working in the Not For Profit world is a little different. We live in a society in which we don’t come across people who LOVE what they do on a daily basis, but every now and then it happens.
Don’t take this proclamation the wrong way, I really like what I do for a living most of the time, and I definitely fall into the category of people that believes in what they do. Luckily most of the people I meet through work can go home knowing that their hard day likely made the world a better place for someone. However, there is one young man in my office that when challenged with a creative project will stand up and loudly pronounce “Bring On The Art”. He really means it too. It’s incredibly inspiring but sometimes can leave me a little envious of his level of passion for what he does.
2. Make Your Art Social
Right now, in this very moment, you can become an artist. Not necessarily one that is going to be proudly displayed on a gallery wall, or have fans lining the read carpet you walk along, but things have changed.
The explosion of social media and online commentary the craving that the public has for content has turned into a need, and intensified. Inspiration, entertainment, and beauty are everywhere and we as a species simply can’t get enough. But most importantly the old world mold that existed right up until the beginning of the 21st century has been broken. In fact, it has been shattered into oblivion.
You find “art” everywhere you look and almost everything that you produce whether text, graphic, entertaining, critical, satirical, or common; it can be considered art. Depending on your perspective anything that you do to change the perception of the world can potentially be viewed as art. With that in mind, all of us who go to work each and every day trying to make things that little bit better could well be contributing to the worlds greatest masterpiece.
When, where, how, why….. ok we all know why. But seriously, how do you go about doing this? Finding the time to do what you want when you are so bogged down doing the things you “need” to do seems pretty unrealistic. Slightly more realistic than the daunting thought of just taking the leap of faith and going for it outright (life changes and all).
Well… two comments from this past week come to mind. One from another co-worker who wanted to get some work done and blurted out “Shut up. I’m putting my head phones on now”. The other from Hugh himself during our Read It For Me webinar. “Get off your ass… To not have an evil plan means you’re not being who you are, who you are meant to be”
Evil Plans are not for everybody and the inspiration leading you to try and create your own plan may forever change you. If you want to live a miserable existence, grinding out a living so you can buy lots of things that won’t make you an ounce happier than you already are, this book isn’t for you.
