This week’s book is We: turning engagement into profits, by Kevin Kruse and Rudy Karsan. You can see the WE video summary, pdf summary and much more inside at Read It For Me Pro. Get access to the WE summary, and hundreds of other book summary resources today. Free trials available.

What you will learn

Engagement has been a buzzword for quite a while in the business world. But for the longest time, there was little in the way of advice on how to systematically achieve it. Luckily, that has changed, and we can all now tap into the wisdom that some of the world’s best companies have shared with the world.

If you need any urging to continue through this summary and find the secrets of the WE approach, consider this: companies with high levels of engagement produce 5 times the shareholder value than those that have low levels of engagement.

Let’s get started!

Brainbomb#1: Clear objectives win.

It’s an obvious fact – people with clear objectives and goals get more done. So why is it that most people don’t have them?

Keep this reminder by your side all week by download the desktop art here: (1440 x 900) or (1920 x 1200). You can also see the video summary, pdf summary and other resources by signing up for a free, no obligation trail membership, or by signing up in to the AFP member portal and looking for our Action University series.

Brainbomb#2: Passion + Purpose + Pay = engagement.

When you find the intersection of what you are passionate about, what you can get paid a good salary doing, and what your “purpose” is, you’ve found the magic spot of full engagement.

Keep this intersection visible all week by downloading the desktop art here: (1440 x 900) or (1920 x 1200). You can also see the video summary, pdf summary and other resources by signing up for a free, no obligation trail membership, or by signing up in to the AFP member portal and looking for our Action University series.

Brainbomb#3: It’s YOUR responsibility to find a job you love.

Whose responsibility is it to find a job you love? Yours. Nobody else can do it for you.

Remind yourself to stop complaining about your job and to find when you love by downloading the desktop art here: (1440 x 900) or (1920 x 1200). You can also see the video summary, pdf summary and other resources by signing up for a free, no obligation trail membership, or by signing up in to the AFP member portal and looking for our Action University series.

Brainbomb#4: What are you doing with your life?

It’s a question we should all ask ourselves from time to time. People change, and you will too.

Make sure you are living at the intersection of the 3Ps by checking in periodically with yourself by downloading the desktop art here: (1440 x 900) or (1920 x 1200). You can also see the video summary, pdf summary and other resources by signing up for a free, no obligation trail membership, or by signing up in to the AFP member portal and looking for our Action University series.

Brainbomb#5: The formula for engagement is…

How do you know if your team is engaged or not? The formula for engagement is pride, satisfaction, advocacy and retention. If you have those four things, you’ve got engagement.

Remind yourself this isn’t really about reading, but learning faster to achieve your goals faster by downloading the desktop art here: (1440 x 900) or (1920 x 1200). If you are an AFP member, you can find this summary inside the members section on the AFP site.

What you will learn

Most people are busy, but if you are working in a non-profit organization, time is more scarce than ever. At the same time, Oscar Wilde once said that “It is what you read when you don’t have to that determines what you will be when you can’t help it.” Simply put, what you put into your brain makes an enormous difference in who you are and who you will become. So why do so few people actually read books on a regular basis after they are finished their formal education and get launched in the “real world”?

If you are willing to put aside the excuse that you don’t have enough time, and learn how to double or even triple your reading speed, you might unlock a world of new possibilities for yourself.

Let’s get started!

Brainbomb#1: You are what you read

It’s what you read when you don’t have to that determines who you will be when you can’t help it. So, what are you putting into your head these days?

Keep this reminder by your side all week by download the desktop art here: (1440 x 900) or (1920 x 1200). You can also see the video summary, pdf summary and other resources by signing up for a free, no obligation trail membership, or by signing up in to the AFP member portal and looking for our Action University series.

Brainbomb#2: To read faster, use your finger.

I bet they didn’t teach you this in grade school, but the single largest thing that will help you read faster is to use your finger.

Remember to give your book the finger by download the desktop art here: (1440 x 900) or (1920 x 1200). You can also see the video summary, pdf summary and other resources by signing up for a free, no obligation trail membership or by by signing up in to the AFP member portal and looking for our Action University series.

Brainbomb#3: Advanced techniques will help you go even faster.

The 4 advanced techniques of underlining, dusting, circling and paragraphing will help you read even faster – up to 1,000 words a minute!

Keep reminders of those 4 techniques by your side all day by downloading the desktop art here: (1440 x 900) or (1920 x 1200). You can also see the video summary, pdf summary and other resources by signing up for a free, no obligation trail membership or by by signing up in to the AFP member portal and looking for our Action University series.

Brainbomb#4: Want to read 4 times faster?

Average readers read at 250 words per minute. Speed readers often break the 1,000 words a minute mark. You can too.

Keep a constant reminder of your 1,000 word/minute goal in front of you by downloading the desktop art here: (1440 x 900) or (1920 x 1200). You can also see the video summary, pdf summary and other resources by signing up for a free, no obligation trail membership or by signing up in to the AFP member portal and looking for our Action University series.

Brainbomb#5: Read faster, learn faster.

Whatever your goal is, you can get there by reading faster and learning more than anybody you know.

Remind yourself this isn’t really about reading, but learning faster to achieve your goals faster by downloading the desktop art here: (1440 x 900) or (1920 x 1200). You can also see the video summary, pdf summary and other resources by signing up for a free, no obligation trail membership or by signing up in to the AFP member portal and looking for our Action University series.

This week’s book is Do The Work, by Steven Pressfield. We are holding a webinar with Steven on Friday, June the 3rd, and you can get FREE access here (spots are limited to 100, and there are only a few left so act quick!).

What you will learn

Have you ever listened to the voice in your head as you were going about your work? Has it ever told you that “there’s always tomorrow”? Has it ever told you that “you aren’t good enough”? Or maybe it’s telling you that “your plans are crazy”. Sometimes that little voice in your head is a good thing, and keeps you out of danger, like that time you wanted to stick your head into the mouth of a live alligator. However, as Stephen Pressfield tells us in Do The Work, this voice doesn’t always have your best interests at heart. It wants you to play it safe, and in the process, scrap the plans you have for greatness.

Here, finally, is the truth about getting to greatness – that for all the plans and dreams you aspire to, you ultimately have to bear down and do the work. It’s not going to be pretty, but it’s the only way to accomplishing great things.

Brainbomb#1: The Best Ideas Will Arrive Anytime.

Just like a Delta airlines flight, the best ideas don’t land on schedule. Sometimes they’ll come when you are sleeping, or worse yet, right smack dab in the middle of a project. Be flexible enough to use your best ideas to your advantage, no matter where you are.

Keep this reminder by your side all week by download the desktop art here: (1440 x 900) or (1920 x 1200). You can also see the video summary, pdf summary and other resources by signing up in to the AFP member portal and looking for our Action University series.

Brainbomb#2: Be ready for problems.

Problems will happen, again and again. They are there to separate the proverbial men from the boys. There’s one thing for certain – there’s no problem tough enough to stop a dream.

Keep this inspiration by your side all week by download the desktop art here: (1440 x 900) or (1920 x 1200).
Brainbomb#3: Slay the dragon, forever.

The dragon is the resistance at the end of your project. It’s strongest then, and by figuring out exactly what you need to do in order to beat it, you’ll be free to “finish” projects for the rest of your life.

Slay the dragon every day by downloading the desktop art here: (1440 x 900) or (1920 x 1200).
Brainbomb#4: Start at the End

All great writers know that you start at the end first. It’s pretty tough to write an amazing story when you don’t know the final scene. The same can be said of each and every project you undertake – if you don’t know where you are going, what are you doing it for?

Never start at the beginning again by downloading the desktop art here: (1440 x 900) or (1920 x 1200). Ignore the voices in your head and follow the voice from your heart, instead.

Remind yourself that hearing voices is ok (really) by downloading the desktop art here: (1440 x 900) or (1920 x 1200).

Gamestorming is a great book for those of you trying to break the mold and transform the way you raise money and steward donors. Given the economic climate and the need to engage donors in new ways everyday, this book couldn’t come at a better time. Here are the top 3 you and your entire team can learn from Gamestorming.

1. Your meetings suck (but it’s not your fault)

Yes, your meetings suck. Especially your “brainstorming sessions”. This isn’t your fault, really, because we’ve all been doing it wrong for decades. The traditional brainstorming session gathers a bunch of people into a room and asks them for their thoughts and opinions on “the future of the organization”. At best, these sessions are a waste of time. At worst, they disempower your entire workforce for one main reason: you don’t follow through with any of the recommendations that were produced. Luckily, the authors of the book have some great advice for you.

Most people jump right for the middle part of the session, which is the “exploration” phase. However, if you want to be truly effective, you need to get great at opening and closing the session.

2. You need to be great at “opening” the session

Opening sets the stage for the entire session. You need to take care of some details, like painting a picture of what you want to achieve throughout the session, and inspiring them to take part with their full commitment (yes, it’s your fault if there’s no participation). The best openings pose the best questions to kick things off. These questions should be designed to get your team to break from tradition, and start thinking creatively. So, don’t ask “what can we do to raise fundraising revenues this year?”. Try asking “if our direct mail programs were cut from the budget tomorrow, what would we do instead?”.

3. You need to be great at “closing” the session

Once you’ve explored the options you’ve generated during the gamestorming session, you need to close the session well in order to produce any results. Ultimately, you shouldn’t leave the session with a flip chart full of ideas and no action plan for what you are going to do about it. Narrow down the options to things that you can actually do in the short-term, and then create action steps for each. Even more importantly, follow up with everybody after the session and give them an update on the progress you and your team are making.

Follow these simple steps, and you might just find that your team actually looks forward to these sessions. Of course, you should buy the book and get the hundreds of pages of details that we missed out on in this post, or for you lucky AFP members, you can go back to the AFP site and watch the summary in Action University.

Its hardly a stretch to say that we all know a third party referral is worth infinitely more than any billboard or advertising campaign impression. Traditionally, a word of mouth referral meant you were as close as you can be to gaining the support of a new contributor without them handing you their money. The challenge was that referral is extremely difficult to entice, and even harder to share with a larger audience without busting the bank.

UnMarketing by Scott Stratten delves right into combining the “Hierarchy of Buying” with Social Media to position your self as an expert, and someone that people will want to listen to. Pay attention though, there are a few key steps to get there, and maintaining your position once you’re there takes discipline, or better yet a plan.

Although its an easy argument to make that core philanthropy principles nor many of the core factors that go into a spending decision haven’t changed, Social Media has re-written the rules of what is possible with third party referrals.

While reading UnMarketing Stratten will take you through three key steps to becoming said expert that people love to listen to, and allow you to propel your business to success. Starting with Creating Traction, then Building on that traction with consistent momentum, and finally expanding your platform to manage your new found success.

While these three stages make up some of the most crucial strategy for any not for profit organizer to understand, the part of the book that really resonated with me, and should with you to, is what Stratten calls the 7 Deadly Social Media Sins.

The 7 Deadly Social Media Sins are:

Greed
Its not all about you, and if you consistently talk about yourself only, your fans will tier and move on.

Gluttony
Quality is much, much better than quantity. There is nothing worse than a LOT of less than stellar postings.

Sloth
Social Media is a conversation. You need to respond or your customers will stop trying to initiate that conversation with you.

Envy
No matter how hard you try you are never going to obtain perfection. Some people may well get closer to it than you do as well. Don’t take it personally, especially online.

Wrath
There is a dark side to social media, and it can get scary. Some people loose control and really end up damaging the reputation they worked to hard to develop. Remember everything you say online is online somewhere forever. Behave accordingly.

Lust
This one is pretty self explanatory. Don’t try and pick up your fans. Its really poor form.

Pride
Whatever you do don’t let your successes go to your head. Arrogant comments can be as damaging as wrath, and again once it online it’s there forever, and out of your control.

Whether you are looking to apply the “Hierarchy Of Buying” to the plethora of social media options for the first time, or may refer to yourself as a seasoned pro offline, you will learn from this book. Books that can instantly help you change the structure and success of your business marketing plan don’t come along all that often. This is one your should read, and then apply what you learn. Unless you don’t want to be found. You will still probably enjoy the book, but I wouldn’t recommend using the lessons within.

Join us for this interactive webinar where you’ll learn exactly how to apply these concepts in your organization, and as usual, leave time to get your questions answered by one of the most fascinating minds in business. Remember to register today even if you can’t make it the day of the event. You can only access the webinar recording after the event if you have registered for the webinar, or if you are a Read It For Me Pro subscriber.

We can honestly say that this gentleman, Mr Hugh MacLeod, is one of a kind. He’s been in the same place many of us found ourselves in during the past few years, and came out victorious. All because of his Evil Plan. For Hugh Macleod things got going a little differently than with a standard career. He forgot his sketch book and started drawing on the back of business cards at bars in Manhattan while struggling how to combat the reality of an off and on advertising career. He needed a new plan.

Hugh developed his own evil plan by sharing the cartoons that he had been drawing on the back of business cards through a newly created blog. The passion that spawned form the blog inspired Hugh’s first book titled “Ignore Everybody” and most recently “Evil Plans”.

Hugh’s book is the story of more than how he did it, but how you can do it too.

Hugh’s Rules.

1. Make Art Every Day
Working in the Not For Profit world is a little different. We live in a society in which we don’t come across people who LOVE what they do on a daily basis, but every now and then it happens.

Don’t take this proclamation the wrong way, I really like what I do for a living most of the time, and I definitely fall into the category of people that believes in what they do. Luckily most of the people I meet through work can go home knowing that their hard day likely made the world a better place for someone. However, there is one young man in my office that when challenged with a creative project will stand up and loudly pronounce “Bring On The Art”. He really means it too. It’s incredibly inspiring but sometimes can leave me a little envious of his level of passion for what he does.

2. Make Your Art Social
Right now, in this very moment, you can become an artist. Not necessarily one that is going to be proudly displayed on a gallery wall, or have fans lining the read carpet you walk along, but things have changed.

The explosion of social media and online commentary the craving that the public has for content has turned into a need, and intensified. Inspiration, entertainment, and beauty are everywhere and we as a species simply can’t get enough. But most importantly the old world mold that existed right up until the beginning of the 21st century has been broken. In fact, it has been shattered into oblivion.

You find “art” everywhere you look and almost everything that you produce whether text, graphic, entertaining, critical, satirical, or common; it can be considered art. Depending on your perspective anything that you do to change the perception of the world can potentially be viewed as art. With that in mind, all of us who go to work each and every day trying to make things that little bit better could well be contributing to the worlds greatest masterpiece.

The Catch

When, where, how, why….. ok we all know why. But seriously, how do you go about doing this? Finding the time to do what you want when you are so bogged down doing the things you “need” to do seems pretty unrealistic. Slightly more realistic than the daunting thought of just taking the leap of faith and going for it outright (life changes and all).

Well… two comments from this past week come to mind. One from another co-worker who wanted to get some work done and blurted out “Shut up. I’m putting my head phones on now”. The other from Hugh himself during our Read It For Me webinar. “Get off your ass… To not have an evil plan means you’re not being who you are, who you are meant to be”

Beware

Evil Plans are not for everybody and the inspiration leading you to try and create your own plan may forever change you. If you want to live a miserable existence, grinding out a living so you can buy lots of things that won’t make you an ounce happier than you already are, this book isn’t for you.

After reading it and being inspired ourselves we set up an exclusive (but FREE) webinar with Gary to review the book, and discuss the Thank You Economy with Gary first hand.

Click here to register for the webinar which we will be hosting at 1pm EST Friday April 8, 2011.

IMPORTANT: Register today even if you can’t make it the day of the event. You can only access the webinar recording after the event if you have registered for the webinar, or if you are a Read It For Me Pro subscriber.

Everything has changed.

Finally, technology is connecting everyone, and everything. Every organization is on an equal playing field when it came to creating and spreading media. So, all that is left for not for profits to do is to create a Twitter account, put up a Facebook page and shoot a few Youtube videos. Right?

Wrong.

However, this isn’t some futuristic new world we are heading for. The Thank You Economy has its roots way back in small town America. Raising capitol was different 50 years ago. To succeed, you needed to put relationships ahead of donations. This was the Thank You Economy and your organization would rise or sink based on what your customers shared with the rest of the community.

Although the times have changed and the methods we use to share information with our contributors, and in turn the ways they share information with “their community”, the same rules apply. This is the message behind Thank You economy by Gary Vanderchuk. At the root of it all Vanderchuk has two basic rules that must be followed in order to succeed.

#1: Instill the Right Culture

The path to victory is through caring more than the competition. This isn’t something you can decree in an email or a formal address, and sit back and magically watch it all come together. There are 6 building blocks you need to implement. When you create these building blocks within your organization, you will be ready for the Thank You Economy.

#2: Use social and traditional media together

It’s not that traditional media is a terrible investment, it’s that traditional media is a terrible investment if it is too expensive. That, Gary says, is the problem. So, if you can find the right pricing, traditional media can still give you a great boost. But you must integrate both types of media together to reach the pinnacle of your potential visibility.

As Vanderchuk writes is his book, you must get ready for the Thank You Economy, or you might just find yourself on the wrong side of history.

This is a great read, and highly recommended regardless of the category you are in. Really, at the end of the day, it all comes down to what your contributors think of you, and who they are telling sharing their opinion with.

Join us for this interactive webinar where you’ll learn about the reasons you make better choices, and the things that lead your decision making astray. Remember to register today even if you can’t make it the day of the event. You can only access the webinar recording after the event if you have registered for the webinar, or if you are a Read It For Me Pro subscriber.

What is a choice, and really guides us in out decision making.
Most western cultures have grown up with the belief that choice is good. How else do you explain the thousands of different choices available to us at the grocery store alone? However, choice isn’t always a good thing. In fact, there are some people in the world who believe that more choice is a negative thing. In a fascinating study, Asian American and Anglo American children were given a set of schoolwork tasks to do. The study concluded that the Asian American children did much better when they believed they were doing what their mothers had picked out for them to do, and the Anglo-American children did much better on tasks where they felt they had the power to choose themselves.

One of the first steps to making really great choices consistently is understanding the hard-wired factors within our psyche that guide our decision making. Sheena outlines each of these four things in a way that will resonate with every reader, but the thing that really strikes home are the six ways which we can begin to make better choices, all the time. They are:

1. Become an expert.
The best decisions are the ones we make when we have all the information. When you are the expert you can evaluate and see all of the possible outcomes. For those few things within you’re expertise you are in great shape, but for the others… well, you better keep reading.

2. Consult with others.
Chances are there are experts within most fields within your circle of connections. If you can’t become the expert yourself, find someone close to you that is. If that doesn’t work, there are always a few who are willing to help for a fee. Take advantage.

3. Collaborate.
If those that are close to you don’t fit into the “expert” category they can still help you in your decision making process. If you can convince those who care for you that your decision is the correct one, chances are it may well be.

4. Look to the crowd.
Looking to go out for dinner in a town you aren’t familiar with? Pull out your laptop and bring up the Zagat Restaurant Guide. The feedback from others can be a very powerful resource, and chances are you will be able to find one that has similar opinions to your own.

5. Categorize.
Start grouping the options together to reduce the number of options that meet all of your needs. Within minutes you will be able to reduce the number of relevant options you have to choose from.

6. Remember your past.
We’ve all hear the term “learn for your mistakes”. Your past decisions, especially how the outcome of that decision made you feel can be invaluable. Use your biases to guide you. Both positive and negative.

None of us can avoid making a choice, even when we would prefer not to. You can make better choices though, and we’ve set up the chance for you to participate in that very discussion.

Join us for this interactive webinar where you’ll learn about the reasons you make better choices, and the things that lead your decision making astray. Remember to register today even if you can’t make it the day of the event.
Don’t forget to check out our offer at the bottom of the post about how you can get Guy’s book along with some great bonuses, for less than you can get it on Amazon.com.

What Enchantment is, and why you need it.

The thing that really resonated with me while I was reading this book is that the ideas and the reality of being completely enchanted with something is something that I am, and I don’t think it is going too far to say “we are”, very familiar with. Although the feeling is very pure and simple, the task of enchanting someone with an idea, a cause, or a service can be incredibly daunting and complicated. In the book Enchantment Guy Kawasaki breaks down the process of enchanting people beautifully.

Although this isn’t really even scratching the surface of what Guy has to share in this book, there are certain things that will make a cause enchanting:

1. It needs to be deep.

The people who feel passionate about a cause or movement need to know without question that you invested significant time anticipating what they will need to know and what they can do to help you bring about change.

2. It needs to be intelligent.

To leave someone enchanted it must solve a problem in smart ways that have either been proven to be effective, or build upon an effective strategy for bringing about change.

3. The “whole package” needs to be complete.

Your audience isn’t going to remain dedicated to your cause for long if the entire experience is thought through and designed to enchant. They want to know what effect their contributions are having on the overall successes of your organization.

4. It has to be empowering.

Quite simply, your supporters must be able to do things that they couldn’t do before they joined your cause, and that they likely wouldn’t be able to do again without it in the future.

5. It should be elegant.

People like attractive things and when they are considering what their role could be in an organization they want to be able to see the pride in what you have created, and the beauty in the effect of it. For some people a simple and understandable structure is the key, but there may be others that are seeking the opposite. Embrace the unique things that you do which make your organization elegant.

If you want to learn the difference between believing in these points and integrating them to leave your contributors or volunteers enchanted with your organization or cause, Guy Kawasaki is the one to teach you. We’ve set up the chance for you to participate in that very discussion.

Don’t forget to check out our offer at the bottom of the post about how you can get Geno’s book along with some great bonuses, for less than you can get it on Amazon.com.

One of the things that I liked most about this book was the distinction between a campaign and a movement. In the next 5 years, I believe that this is how all organizations (non-profit or otherwise) will be viewing the works that they do. Here is a closer look at the differences between campaigns and movements.

1. Movements don’t have a beginning and end.

If it has a beginning and an end, it’s a campaign, not a movement. Movements continue on as long as kindred spirits are around to participate.

2. The language is different.

If you are sitting in a meeting and the vocabulary sounds like you have landed in the middle of a strategy session during World War II, you are in a campaign meeting. Movements feel more like you landed in the middle of an evangelical sermon. Words like passion, love and inspiration get used.

3. There is a lot more “me” in movements.

If language you hear is dry and detached, you are listening to somebody talk about a campaign. In movements, people have a hard time separating the “me” from the equation. If you’ve ever been to Toronto, you’ve likely heard somebody say “this is the year we are going to make the playoffs”, even though they clearly never have, or never will, play professional hockey. This, of course, is different than when your mother told you that there’s no “I” in team. Being personally invested in the outcome of the cause is critical to your success.

4. Movements rely on word-of-mouth.

Campaigns rely on mass media to get the message across. Television, radio and direct mail are the main means that most organizations employ in campaigns. In movements, the people are the medium. Giving them the information they need in order to spread the word about your organization is the key.

5. Movements say “we’re all in this together”.

When you are working in a campaign, it’s very much an “us versus them” mentality. This is dangerous for a number of reasons, and pretty much assures that you will never lead a movement. Movements, however, ensure that everybody feels like they have a stake in the outcome, both internal staff and external volunteers.
